About Zero Street Foundation

Zero Street Foundation, founded by Peter Ndiboe, is a non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting the marginalized communities in Mathare slums and its environs. The foundation focuses on providing essential services, including education, healthcare, and legal support, to women and children, street families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Peter Ndiboe, a passionate community leader, has been at the forefront of this mission, working tirelessly together with his team to ensure that no one is left behind in the quest for a better life.

Partnership with Esheria

In the past three months, Esheria has proudly partnered with Zero Street Foundation to further the realization of access to justice and the democratization of legal information. This collaboration has been instrumental in enhancing the foundation's capacity to deliver robust civic education and legal support to the communities they serve.

Empowering Through LexChat

Esheria's cutting-edge technology, LexChat, has been a game-changer in this partnership. LexChat has enabled Zero Street Foundation community paralegals to undertake extensive civic education initiatives targeted at:

  • Women and children
  • Street families
  • The elderly
  • Persons with disabilities

One of the most remarkable features of LexChat is its ability to provide legal information and education in the mother tongue of the local communities. So far, our engineers have made LexChat accessible in Luo, Kikuyu, Ekegussi, Luhya, and Akamba, the predominant languages spoken in Mathare slums and surrounding areas. This linguistic inclusivity ensures that the information is comprehensible and relatable, significantly boosting its impact.

Bringing Court Attendance Closer

In addition to the flagship program of civic education, Esheria has embarked on an innovative initiative to bring court attendance closer to affected community members. Recognizing the challenges faced by residents in attending court sessions—ranging from lack of information on hearing dates to transportation issues—Esheria has facilitated the procurement of three laptops for Zero Street Foundation. These laptops are used to help residents, often charged with petty offenses, to attend their court cases virtually.

This initiative aims to:

  1. Reduce abscondence and subsequent arrests for contempt of court.
  2. Ensure timely attendance by providing accurate information on hearing and mention dates.
  3. Eliminate the financial burden of traveling to courts in Nairobi.

By addressing these barriers, Esheria and Zero Street Foundation are making significant strides in ensuring that justice is not only accessible but also attainable for the most vulnerable members of the community.

Impact and Future Goals

The partnership between Esheria and Zero Street Foundation has already begun to transform lives in Mathare and its environs. Through our joint efforts, we have empowered countless individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the legal system effectively. Our commitment to using technology to bridge the justice gap is unwavering, and we look forward to expanding these initiatives to reach even more communities in the future.

Together, Esheria and Zero Street Foundation are paving the way for a more just and equitable society, where every individual has the opportunity to understand and exercise their legal rights. We are proud of what we have achieved in the past three months and are excited about the continued impact of our partnership.
